CV

CV

Control Voltage is a mechanism for passing information between analogue synthesisers through modulation of voltage.

CV In Reason

Reason uses CV cabling and sockets to pass information between effects and instruments. Reason's use of CV can be separated into three overlapping types:

  • Curve CV is a generic signal.
  • Gate CV is effectively a switching signal with two positions of on or off. It expects a signal value of 0 or 127. Anything less than 127 will be treated as off (0), so more complex CV signals can be passed in to a Gate CV input.
  • Note CV carries midi note information, covering all the notes on a keyboard from C-2–G8.

Unipolar vs Bipolar

A signal can be described as Unipolar or Bipolar depending on its range.

  • Unipolar signals range from 0–1 (Reason uses values from 0–127).
  • Bipolar signals range from -1–1 (Reason uses values from -127–127).
