Gating
- A gated signal is a signal that is cut when the it drops to a given threshold.
- It expands the dynamic range of a signal.
- Opposite of compression.
Controls
Uses
- Can be used to cut out a signal above the noise floor. For example if a vocal is recorded with background noise, the threshold can be set to just above the volume of the background noise so that the signal cuts out when the vocal drops out.
Expander
An expander is just a gate that lowers the volume of the signal rather than cut it completely. When a ratio is at infinity it is a gate. When it is less it is an expander.
